Public health officials recorded more than 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 three times in the past seven days, including Wednesday.
The count for Wednesday, the latest day for which data is available, stood at 2,007, up by 360 from the day before. The county also reported 10 deaths.
The highs in the past seven days, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, occurred on July 14-15. Local officials recorded 2,236 and 2,198 new cases, respectively, on those days.
The low in the past seven days dropped to 1,190 on Sunday. The recent daily peak, 2,354, came July 13.
Cameron Kaiser, M.D., M.P.H., the county’s deputy public health officer, urged those feeling ill not to put off a medical consultation.
“Treatment works best if it’s started as soon as possible after infection, so get tested as soon as symptoms develop,” he said.
With the new numbers, the two-year local total of COVID-19 cases rose to 870,079, while the death toll stood at 5,387.
More local patients are requiring hospital care due to the coronavirus as well. The state reported 461 COVID patients in county hospitals, with 49 in intensive care.
Meanwhile, the White House revealed that President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19.
His symptoms – a runny nose, fatigue, a dry cough – started late Wednesday, Biden’s physician Kevin O’Connor said on Thursday in a letter to the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
He added that he anticipated Biden would respond favorably to treatment.
