SEELEY – An unidentified man was reportedly shot and killed by county Sheriff’s Office deputies in Seeley during an altercation that also left two deputies hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 5.

The fatal shooting reportedly occurred after the unidentified man allegedly struck a deputy in the head with an undisclosed object during an altercation at a residence in the 1900 block of Holt Avenue at about 1:15 p.m., the county Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release.

Deputies had initially arrived at the scene in response to a report of an individual who brandished a rifle and threatened to shoot the reporting party, the agency stated.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a male subject run back into the house and subsequently made contact with him at the rear of the residence. The man allegedly resisted deputies’ attempts to subdue and detain him, prompting the deployment of a Taser, which failed to immobilize the individual, the press release stated.

The man is alleged to have then struck a deputy on the head with a blunt object, prompting the officer-involved-shooting. No details were disclosed about how many deputies may have discharged their service weapons.

Deputies performed life saving measures on the male subject until relieved by Imperial County Fire Department personnel. Fire Department personnel pronounced the man deceased on scene at about 1:35 p.m.

Two deputies sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other members of the community were injured during this incident.

The information disclosed by the Sheriff’s Office was based on the preliminary and ongoing investigation. It could potentially change as investigators interview witnesses and review evidence, the press release stated.

The agency’s Investigations Unit, Officer Involved Shooting Team, Scientific Investigations Unit and the coroner’s unit were dispatched to the scene along with the assistance of the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit at (442) 265-2105.
